We have some fantastic flash fiction lined up for February. Here’s a little taster to whet your appetite:
5 February 2021 – ‘A Can of Coke’ by Gabrielle McAree:
Evan wants a swimming pool in the backyard. He wants to substitute showering for lying comatose in chlorine and the luxury of lounging on a pepperoni pizza floatie at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday. He wants to watch his skin dehydrate in slow motion. Evan wants a lot of things.
12 February 2021 – ‘Orbit 41’ by Dawn Vogel:
Arjun had been frowning at the telemetry readouts from Aryabhata since the first time the satellite passed over SHAR. First, it had been the spin. Then, the power for the aeronomy experiment, followed by signal drops.
19 February 2021 – ‘Distant, Socially’ by Carolyn R. Russell:
The Dollar Store is only a couple of miles away, but I get stuck in the wake of a school bus and curse my luck. I hate forcing the drivers behind me to wait while I count to twenty after the last child is safely inside, but only then can I let my foot hit the gas pedal again. Thankfully, the bus stops only once before I pull off the road.
26 February 2021 – ‘Burial Ground’ by Sage Tyrtle:
My hand curls around my phone in my pocket, even though it flickered from 1% battery to a dimmed screen and then to black a week ago. I am wearing long johns, jeans, three t-shirts, a sweater, gloves, and my Canada Goose coat with the hood up. Eric is ahead of me, skipping, looking eleven instead of thirty-one. He squats down, moving dead leaves to the side. He turns and shouts, ‘Babe! I found the perfect burial ground!’
