Human Terrain by Emily Bullock

We’re delighted to announce Reflex Press will be publishing Human Terrain, a collection of short stories by Emily Bullock.

Human Terrain. The Army acknowledges, through the lessons of Afghanistan and Iraq, that human geography is as important as any satellite map.

Human Terrain deals with female voices, working-class existences, as well as male characters battling with their masculinity. The stories take the reader on the characters’ quests for identity and acceptance. There’s the mother working as cutman for her daughter in the boxing ring; the family whose mother abandons them at the seaside; the gardener looking for love among the grass cuttings and weeds. It portrays the struggles of rural poverty and the bleak beauty of seaside towns after the holidaymakers have left. But of course the characters often don’t know their own tragedies, and there is humour to be found in their endeavours.

Human Terrain will be published in early 2021. Subscribe to our email newsletter for preorder information and subscriber discounts.
