We’re delighted to announce Reflex Press has acquired Throw a Seven, a novella-in-flash by Nod Ghosh.
Throw a Seven follows seventeen souls as they set sail from the port of Haldia, India, in 1853, bound for a new life in a new land. They have come from Calcutta with The Nobab, a gruff but fair employer. They are leaving behind their old lives to join other settlers in New Zealand, hoping for a brighter future.
Among the new arrivals is smart, devious Angelina, a chhi-chhi girl wishing to escape the shame of her mixed heritage. Angelina casts her father’s dice to help decide her fate. Over the course of thirty flashes, Throw a Seven follows Angelina and her fellow immigrants, a fascinating cast of characters, as they live, love and fight together over three decades.

Originally from the U.K., Nod Ghosh is a graduate of the Hagley Writers’ Institute, Christchurch, New Zealand. By day, Nod works as a scientist, using smoke, mirrors and magic to help diagnose cancers.
Published books include The Crazed Wind (2018), Filthy Sucre (2020), and Toy Train (2021), all novellas-in-flash from Truth Serum Press.
Nod has judged the sixteenth Bath Flash Fiction Award, read for SmokeLong Quarterly and was guest editor for UK National Flash Fiction Day’s 2021 anthology Legerdemain.
